“To Do or Not to Do — That Is the Question”
Okay, Shakespeare didn’t quite say it that… but you get my drift.
You can read a thousand books on any subject, but unless you do something with that knowledge, it stays theoretical. Turning knowledge into skill requires one simple but powerful thing: action. And a huge part of that action?
Repetition!
Ask any musician. Practice can be boring, but it’s also essential for progress. And even if you’re not a musician, the same applies to mastering anything.
Study, training, practice can all feel repetitive, especially if you’re not that way inclined. My wife who is very intelligent, just can’t study. I on the other hand don’t have a problem with this.
It’s also what helped me achieve a Distinction pass in my Music Performance Licentiate exam, play in an award-winning band, be top goal scorer in a championship league side after only 3 years as a youth footballer.
As such, here are five suggestions to make repetitive practice more effective (and less overwhelming):
- Honesty: Be real about your time. Only take on what your schedule truly allows.
- Management: Build a progressive practice plan. Write down your goals, prioritise them and focus on one or two at a time.
- Strategy: Tackle the quick wins first, or the hardest ones if that suits you better. The key is to complete each with confidence.
- Awareness: Don’t grind yourself into tension. Over-practising under stress just programs bad habits. Stay relaxed and mindful.
- Rest: Start fresh. Take regular breaks. Revitalisation fuels consistency.
Progress isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing consistently and intentionally.
