Immersive learning! What is it and does it work?
Back in the mid-90s, I already had 15 years of experience as a professional drummer and rhythm was second nature to me. Then I stumbled across drum circles and curiosity led me to Californian Arthur Hull, the ‘godfather’ of the global drum circle movement. I learned he was running a weekend facilitation workshop in Oxford (UK) so I jumped at the chance.
In just three days I learned more about conducting, pacing and facilitating a drum circle than I could have figured out on my own in two years. Sure, my drumming and percussion background gave me a head start, but Arthur’s expert guidance was priceless.
That experience led me to attending numerous drum circles to hone my skills and eventually sparked the creation of my own organisation ‘Hands on Drums’. We ran corporate events (clients included NatWest, Hammersmith Health Authority and Thames Yacht Club) and a monthly community drum circle in Harrow, North London with 20 to 30 participants attending. I even facilitated a mass drum circle for the Harrow Arts Festival.
Here’s why workshops that offer intensive learning are so powerful:
– They cut out the fluff and focus on essentials
– They give hands on, practical experience
– They encourage interaction and real-time learning
– They save months (or years) of self-study by tapping into expert knowledge
Aside from Arthur, I’ve been fortunate to learn from other master mentors in my life-time which has greatly shaped what I do today at Voros Performance. My Rhythmic and Performance workshops are a platform for accelerated learning, offering insights that could otherwise take years to master.
If you want to absorb years of insight in a short space of time, a workshop is one of the best ways to do it. Perhaps we’ll share one together??
