Here are some facts:
- Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warns that AI could eliminate up to 50% of entry-level white-collar jobs by 2030, potentially leading to an unemployment spike of 10–20%.
- A Gravitee survey indicates that nearly half of UK executives believe over half of the work in roles like software engineering, HR management, and customer service could be automated by AI agents in the near future.
- Goldman Sachs estimates that AI could replace the equivalent of 300 million full-time jobs globally, with a significant portion of these losses occurring in developed economies.
That looks a little scary to me. So is it time to re-think and re-train?
In my experience, I saw the writing on the wall a few years ago when technology was changing the music industry. Drummers like me were being replaced by machines and if I was to survive, I had to rethink everything. So I made some changes:
Step 1: I stopped seeing myself as just a drummer for hire and added to my skills – eg. I embraced singing, a talent I’d sidelined. This opened more work. I learned piano so I could understand music better.
Step 2: I stopped resisting the rise of electronic driven music and started learning how to work with it. I taught myself MIDI programming and how to create music. This opened up more doors.
Step 3: I stepped into other music related areas such as teaching, examining and mentoring. I increased my earning potential.
This is my story.
The world is rapidly changing and as someone older I know that I’m struggling to keep up with these changes. But this is not just about the older generation. The AI revolution is affecting young and old, in all walks of life across many industries.
Are you prepared for the future?
Start thinking about making changes now before this becomes a crisis in your life.
